📖 The Story
On June 15, 2023, Base mainnet produced its first block. For almost a month the chain ran nearly empty. On July 13, 2023, Coinbase opened Base to builders.
In the opening hours of that day, a builder deployed an ERC-20 called Knif (KNI), the first independent, tradeable ERC-20 on the entire chain. It was never paired, never traded, never shilled. It had two transfers in its whole life: the mint, and a single one-token test send. Then the chain moved on without it.

The wallet that deployed KNI (0xe1581c10…bd84bad2) deployed three things on builder day: a soulbound badge called BASEBUILDERS, the Knif token, and a Knif NFT, all in one afternoon. It looks like the work of someone smoke-testing a brand-new chain on the day it opened.
That same builder is now involved in bringing KNI back.
On May 29, 2026, the deployer wallet moved the full 999,999,999 KNI supply to a new address (0xcd58eb44…ef839adb) ahead of the relaunch. You can see that transfer here:
